PNG Government Advances Facebook Regulation Amid Rising Online Threats

The Papua New Guinea government has successfully tested a new ICT control system aimed at curbing harmful online content, including hate speech, misinformation, and pornography.

Police Minister Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jnr. has commended the initiative, emphasizing that it will help create a safer digital space for all citizens.

“We are not attempting to suppress free speech or restrict our citizens from expressing their viewpoints,” Minister Tsiamalili assured.

“However, the unchecked proliferation of fake news, hate speech, pornography, child exploitation, and incitement to violence on platforms such as Facebook is unacceptable.”

The test was carried out under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2024, in collaboration with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC), the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA), and internet service providers.

The new technology enables authorities to monitor and regulate harmful content while maintaining freedom of expression.

Minister Tsiamalili highlighted the government’s commitment to working closely with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, urging them to promote responsible platform usage in PNG.

“We expect Facebook and other social media companies to act with responsibility and to partner with us in ensuring their platforms are not exploited for harmful purposes,” he stated.

Additionally, the government plans to collaborate with internet service providers to ensure proper registration and accountability of operators.

“As we progress technologically, we must ensure that these tools are leveraged in ways that benefit our people rather than cause harm,” Minister Tsiamalili concluded.
