Wale Budda Molumi has officially been appointed as the Acting Registrar of the Cooperative Society of Papua New Guinea, following the revocation of Brian Waffiโ€™s appointment. His appointment was formalized through a National Gazette published on February 17, 2025, by the Minister for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Win Bakri Daki.

According to the gazette, under the powers granted by the Co-operative Societies Act (Chapter 389), Minister Daki revoked Waffiโ€™s appointment and appointed Molumi, with his tenure commencing from the date of publication.

On February 20, 2025, during a small handover ceremony, Brian Waffi officially handed over the office keys to Molumi and urged Cooperative Society officers to work together under his leadership. He emphasized the importance of teamwork in advancing economic growth through cooperative societies.

Molumi, who holds a Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Accounting from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology, brings extensive experience from both the public and private sectors. He expressed gratitude to the Marape-Rosso Government and Minister Daki for their confidence in his leadership.

“I am humbled by this appointment and will do my best to serve our cooperative societies across the country. Cooperatives are a vital part of our economy, and I am committed to ensuring they thrive through transparency, accountability, and innovation,” Molumi stated.

He also thanked the Secretary for Commerce and Industry, David Ganaii, and expressed his eagerness to work closely with him.

“I appreciate the support from Secretary Ganaii and the department. Together, we will implement key reforms that will empower cooperative societies and strengthen their contribution to Papua New Guineaโ€™s economy,” he said.

Molumi also acknowledged the Cooperative Society staff for their warm welcome.

“I am excited to work alongside a dedicated team that understands the importance of cooperatives. With teamwork and commitment, we will drive real progress for our people,” he added.

With a strong background in business development, financial management, and governance, Molumi is expected to implement reforms focusing on financial transparency, governance structures, and improved support for cooperative societies.

“Our focus will be on reviewing the Co-operative Societies Act 1982 to modernize regulations, improve financial transparency, enhance governance, and provide better support for cooperative societies to drive economic growth in PNG. We will also review the Cooperative Societies Authority Framework in 2025,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the Cooperative Societyโ€™s work, ensuring that small businesses, farmers, and local entrepreneurs benefit from stronger cooperative networks and sustainable economic development in Papua New Guinea.

The Cooperative Society of Papua New Guinea facilitates and drives the registration, regulation, and governance of cooperative societies to promote economic participation and community-driven business growth. It also provides support through funding, training, and market access to enhance the sustainability and success of cooperatives nationwide.
